Accra Enters Global Top 20 as One of the World’s Best Nightlife Cities

Accra has earned another international spotlight after being ranked 18th among the world’s best nightlife cities for 2026, placing Ghana’s capital among some of the world’s most recognised destinations for after-dark entertainment.
The ranking was released by Time Out following a global survey involving more than 24,000 city residents, alongside assessments from city editors, culture experts and nightlife specialists.
Accra was one of only two African cities to make the top 20, with Johannesburg ranking seventh. Bangkok took the number-one position, followed by Berlin and New York City.
The recognition reflects Accra’s growing reputation for entertainment, live music, nightlife and social experiences.
According to the ranking, residents highlighted the city’s strong sense of community, friendliness and accessibility. The city’s nightlife scene also received recognition for its affordability and the quality of its events and music.
Accra’s nightlife extends across several parts of the city, from established entertainment areas to newer destinations that have emerged in recent years.
Traditional nightlife hotspots such as Osu continue to attract residents and visitors, while areas including East Legon and Cantonments have seen the growth of more premium entertainment venues.
The city’s music culture has also contributed significantly to its nightlife identity. While Afrobeats remains an important part of Accra’s entertainment scene, alternative electronic music, alté and other genres are increasingly finding audiences among young people.
For Ghana’s tourism and entertainment industries, the ranking could provide another opportunity to market Accra as a destination for visitors looking beyond traditional tourist attractions.
The recognition also highlights the economic potential of the city’s nightlife sector, which supports businesses and workers across entertainment, hospitality, food, transportation and events.
With Accra now sitting at number 18 on the global list, the ranking provides international recognition of something many residents and visitors already know: the Ghanaian capital becomes a very different city after dark.
