Accra Mayor engages Kaneshie traders ahead of GARID road works

The Mayor of Accra, Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has engaged traders at the Kaneshie Market over planned road closure arrangements ahead of the commencement of works under the Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development (GARID) Project.
The engagement, held on Thursday, September 3, 2026, formed part of efforts by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) to inform traders about the project and its possible impact on trading activities.
During the meeting, the Mayor assured traders that relevant information concerning the road closures, construction activities and any possible disruptions would be communicated through the appropriate channels.
He acknowledged concerns among some traders about possible relocation, eviction and disruption to their businesses, urging them not to rely on rumours but to wait for official information from the Assembly and relevant implementing agencies.
According to the Mayor, the GARID Project is aimed at improving drainage systems, reducing flooding and strengthening resilience in flood-prone areas of Greater Accra.
He noted that flooding continues to affect lives, businesses, roads and public infrastructure across parts of Accra, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall.
While acknowledging that the project could cause some temporary inconvenience, Hon. Allotey said its long-term benefits would include safer communities, improved mobility and better protection for businesses within the affected areas.
The Mayor further assured the traders that the Assembly would continue engaging stakeholders throughout the implementation process and would provide timely information on any changes that could affect their operations.
He also urged traders to maintain clean surroundings, desist from dumping refuse into drains and support the Assembly’s sanitation and decongestion initiatives.
Market leaders were encouraged to assist in educating traders on the road closure arrangements and the need to comply with directives from the city authorities.
