Accra Mayor leads enforcement of tricycle safety directive at Kaneshie

The Mayor of Accra, Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has led an enforcement exercise to ensure compliance with the Accra Metropolitan Assembly’s (AMA) tricycle safety directive.

The exercise, held at Kaneshie First Light on Thursday, September 3, 2026, followed the expiration of a grace period given to tricycle operators to comply with road safety measures aimed at reducing crashes within the metropolis.

During the exercise, the Mayor engaged tricycle riders and inspected their level of compliance. He reminded operators that they were required to install reflective stickers on the rear and sides of their tricycles, while riders were also expected to wear helmets, reflective jackets and other appropriate safety gear.

Hon. Allotey explained that the directive was not intended to punish tricycle operators but to protect riders, passengers and other road users from avoidable crashes. He noted that reflective stickers would improve the visibility of tricycles at night, during rainfall and under other low-visibility conditions.

The Mayor also cautioned tricycle riders against using inner lanes on highways, stressing that they should use the outer lanes to minimise the risk of collisions with fast-moving vehicles.

He urged tricycle operators and rider unions to support the enforcement exercise by ensuring that their members fully comply with the safety requirements.

Hon. Allotey further stated that the Assembly would continue working with relevant state agencies to improve road safety, restore discipline and protect lives across the metropolis.
