The National Coordinator of the National AfCFTA Coordination Office, Dode Seidu, says Ghana made significant progress under the African Continental Free Trade Area in 2025, exporting non-traditional export goods to 47 African countries.
In an interview on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, Mr Seidu said the feat is evidence of the country’s implementation of the AfCFTA through initiatives across the public and private sectors.
He explained that Ghana was the first country to establish a national coordination office to support implementation, with several government agencies integrating AfCFTA into their operations.
Mr Seidu cited the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre’s establishment of an AfCFTA focal desk and the Ghana Export Promotion Authority’s 2025 Non Traditional Export report which captured the 47 country export footprint.
According to data from the Ghana Statistical Service, Ghana in 2025 recorded a trade surplus of GH¢34.7 billion with Africa, exporting to 51 African countries overall, with South Africa remaining the leading export destination within the continent, accounting for over half of exports to the region, followed by Burkina Faso, Togo and Cote d’Ivoire.
Mr Seidu however cautioned that awareness among small and medium sized enterprises remains low and called for intensified education to enable more businesses to take advantage of the continental market of 1.3 billion people.
Ghana was one of eight countries that participated in the AfCFTA Guided Trade Initiative, with 63 SMEs already exporting to Kenya and other African countries under the pilot phase.
