AMA intensifies enforcement to reclaim BRT bus shelters from traders

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has intensified efforts to reclaim Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) shelters across Accra that have been occupied by traders and other commercial operators.

The latest enforcement exercise was led by the Mayor of Accra, Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, on Monday, October 5, 2026, at the Aayalolo BRT shelter near the former Telecel office at the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange.

During the exercise, the AMA enforcement team removed tables, goods and other items belonging to traders who had occupied portions of the shelter to sell mobile phones, accessories and other items.

Despite rainfall, the Mayor, together with the Coordinating and Finance Directors and members of the enforcement team, proceeded with the operation to clear the facility and restore access for commuters.

Mayor Allotey explained that the exercise was not aimed at targeting individuals or taking away people’s livelihoods, but was necessary to restore order and ensure that public infrastructure was used for its intended purpose.

He noted that the occupation of the shelter had forced commuters to wait along the road instead of using the designated facility, putting both pedestrians and motorists at risk.

The Mayor also pointed to the immediate improvement in movement after the area was cleared, saying it demonstrated how unauthorised trading activities had contributed to congestion and restricted access around the bus shelter.

The AMA says the enforcement forms part of broader efforts to maintain order, protect public infrastructure and improve pedestrian and vehicular movement within the capital.
