AMA to commission new multi-purpose abattoir in Accra

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) is set to commission a new multi-purpose abattoir in the coming days as part of efforts to improve hygienic meat processing and protect public health.

The facility, located in Accra, has been developed to provide improved sanitary and veterinary conditions for the slaughtering and preparation of animals for public consumption.

The new abattoir includes an offloading bay, veterinary section, changing rooms, storage facilities, washrooms, freezing bays, slaughtering and processing areas, an animal drinking pond and a cattle holding area.

The facility will allow veterinary officers to properly examine animals before they are approved for slaughter and processing. It is also expected to strengthen compliance with food safety and environmental health standards.

The project forms part of measures to ensure that meat supplied to residents of Accra is processed under safe and hygienic conditions, reducing health risks linked to poor slaughtering and meat handling.

Beyond public health, the facility is expected to create economic opportunities for residents, particularly those in Jamestown and surrounding communities, while supporting butchers, livestock traders and other businesses within the meat industry.
