AMA to host world cleanup day exercise on October 3

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) is set to host the national flagship clean-up exercise to commemorate the 2026 World Cleanup Day on Saturday, October 3, as part of the October edition of the National Sanitation Day.
The exercise will be held under the national theme, “National Sanitation Day: Local Actions Yielding National Impact,” and will support the government’s Clean Up Ghana Agenda aimed at promoting collective action and improved environmental sanitation.
As the host assembly, the AMA will coordinate clean-up activities across its three sub-metropolitan areas. The exercise will focus on desilting drains, general cleaning, and the removal and collection of refuse at selected locations, including London Market and Rawlings Park in Ashiedu Keteke, Tuesday Market and Camara in Ablekuma South, and Circle Neoplan in Okaikoi South.
The AMA has directed all shops, markets and other commercial establishments within its jurisdiction to temporarily suspend business operations from 6:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon on October 3 to enable owners and operators to participate in the clean-up exercise.
Participants are expected to assist with desilting drains, sweeping streets, clearing refuse and cleaning their immediate surroundings.
The Assembly has also indicated that Public Health Officers, popularly known as Sama-Sama, together with the AMA Sanitation Task Force, will be deployed across the metropolis to monitor compliance and enforce sanitation directives.
According to the AMA, persons who fail to comply with the directives could face sanctions, including prosecution and penalties prescribed by law.
The Assembly is calling on corporate institutions, NGOs, community-based organisations, religious bodies, youth groups and schools to support the initiative through active participation and community mobilisation.
The AMA stressed that maintaining a clean city requires sustained participation from residents and other stakeholders and cannot be achieved by the Assembly alone.
The October 3 exercise is therefore expected to bring residents and institutions together in a collective effort to promote cleaner communities, improved sanitation and a healthier environment across Accra.
