Basic Schools Reopen Across Ghana As New Academic Year Begins

Basic school pupils across Ghana have returned to classrooms today, Tuesday, September 8, 2026, as the 2026/2027 academic year officially gets underway.

The reopening marks the beginning of a new academic journey for pupils in kindergarten, primary and junior high schools across the country.

According to the academic calendar released by the Ghana Education Service, pupils are expected to spend 15 weeks covering the first term of the academic year.

For many families, the reopening comes with the familiar rush of preparing children for school, including purchasing uniforms, books, bags, shoes and other essential supplies.

However, the new academic year is also expected to bring renewed attention to issues surrounding the quality of education, classroom facilities, teacher availability and the overall learning environment.
