Story by: Regina Bless

Former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has held discussions with representatives of various artisan and business groups to address challenges facing their industries and explore ways to support their growth and job creation.

The meeting brought together the leadership of the Ghana Artisans Association, hairdressers and beauticians, tailors and dressmakers, barbers, as well as representatives from the construction and building materials industry.

The discussions focused on issues affecting the operations and development of businesses within these sectors, which have significant potential to create employment and contribute to Ghana’s economic growth.

Dr Bawumia highlighted the need for greater support for these industries, particularly in the areas of skills training and certification, access to credit, the use of solar energy and the introduction of a simplified tax system.

He noted that improving training and certification could help artisans strengthen their professional skills, improve the quality of their services and enhance their competitiveness.

The discussions also emphasised the potential of solar power to help businesses manage electricity costs, while better access to credit could enable small business owners to expand their operations, acquire equipment and create more jobs.

A simplified tax system was also identified as an important measure that could make tax compliance easier for businesses and support the growth of small-scale enterprises.

Dr Bawumia expressed appreciation to the representatives of the various groups for participating in the meeting and sharing their concerns and suggestions.

The engagement underscores the importance of supporting Ghana’s informal sector and small businesses through policies and initiatives that promote skills development, access to financing, affordable energy and a more business-friendly environment.
