Bawumia: Protect Workers From AI

Story By: Deborah Adorsu

NPP Flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has called for new laws to protect Ghanaian workers from job losses caused by Artificial Intelligence (AI).

He made the call during an engagement with the Trades Union Congress (TUC) in Accra, where discussions focused on labour issues, economic transformation and the future of work.

Dr Bawumia admitted that AI can improve productivity, efficiency and service delivery in agriculture, health, education and other sectors. But he warned that its rapid growth is a “frightening prospect” for workers, because machines and software are now able to do tasks traditionally done by humans.

He said Ghana cannot sit and watch while technology changes industries.

The country needs a proactive national strategy to ensure AI brings growth without destroying livelihoods.

Dr Bawumia warned that Africa’s youthful population could face rising unemployment if technology moves faster than investment in human capital.

He expressed confidence that with the right policies and legal safeguards, Ghana can harness the benefits of AI while protecting employment and preserving the dignity of work.

He also urged unions to take an active role in national discussions on AI, so workers are not left behind.
