Breast Cancer Awareness Month: Every story is unique, every journey matters

Story by: Regina Bless

October is observed globally as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about breast cancer, encouraging early detection, supporting those affected, and promoting access to quality treatment.

Breast cancer remains the most common cancer among women worldwide. According to the World Health Organization, an estimated 2.4 million women were diagnosed with breast cancer in 2024, while about 694,000 women died from the disease.

One of the most important messages during this month is the need to know your breasts and pay attention to unusual changes. Possible warning signs include a new lump or thickening in the breast, changes in the size or shape of the breast, changes to the skin or nipple, or unusual or bloody discharge from the nipple. Anyone who notices a concerning change should seek medical advice promptly.

Breast cancer can affect women at different ages, and having no family history does not mean a person cannot develop the disease. WHO notes that most women diagnosed with breast cancer do not have a known family history of the disease.

This year’s theme, “Every story is unique, every journey matters,” reminds us that behind every diagnosis is a person with their own experience, challenges and support needs. Breast cancer awareness should therefore go beyond wearing pink—it should encourage people to learn, seek appropriate medical care, support patients and survivors, and help reduce barriers to early diagnosis and treatment.

As October begins, the message is simple: know the signs, seek medical attention when something feels unusual, encourage loved ones to take their breast health seriously, and support those going through treatment.

Breast cancer awareness is not just about one month. It is about turning awareness into action and helping more people receive timely care.
