Child Health Day: Promoting healthy and safe childhoods
Story by: Regina Bless
Child Health Day is observed to raise awareness about the importance of protecting children’s physical, mental and emotional well-being and ensuring that every child has access to the care and support needed to grow and develop.
A child’s health is influenced by several factors, including proper nutrition, regular medical check-ups, immunisation, clean water, sanitation, physical activity and a safe home and school environment.
Early attention to health concerns is especially important because children may not always be able to clearly communicate when they are unwell. Parents and caregivers are encouraged to pay attention to changes in a child’s behaviour, appetite, sleep patterns and physical condition and seek medical advice when necessary.
Mental and emotional health are equally important. Children need supportive relationships, encouragement and safe spaces where they can express their feelings without fear of being judged or ignored. Bullying, violence, neglect and abuse can have serious effects on a child’s development and well-being.
Schools and communities also have an important role to play by promoting healthy lifestyles, hygiene, physical activity and access to health information.
Child Health Day therefore serves as a reminder that investing in children’s health is an investment in the future. Every child deserves the opportunity to grow up healthy, protected, supported and able to reach their full potential.
