Court blocks MDC from enforcing CRE for 792 newly trained doctors

Story by: Regina Bless

The Human Rights Court 2 of the High Court in Accra has granted an interim injunction restraining the Medical and Dental Council (MDC) from enforcing the Stage 1 Common Registration Examination (CRE) as a requirement for the provisional registration of 792 newly trained medical doctors.

The order also restrains the Attorney-General and the Ministry of Health from enforcing the examination requirement pending the hearing of the substantive case and an injunction application on notice filed by the Federation of Ghana Medical Students’ Associations (FGMSA) and the affected students.

In a press statement dated Wednesday, October 21, 2026, FGMSA announced that the court’s decision effectively halts the examination, which was scheduled to take place on Thursday, October 22.

The examination was a mandatory requirement for the affected doctors to obtain provisional registration and commence their housemanship.

Following the ruling, the federation called on all parties involved to respect the court’s order while the legal proceedings continue.

FGMSA maintained that decisions affecting the professional future of graduating medical and dental students must be guided by the law, fairness and due process.

The federation also expressed appreciation to its legal team, the affected graduating classes, and medical and dental students for their support throughout the process.

It added that further updates on the case would be communicated through its official communication channels.

The court’s intervention comes amid a legal challenge to the examination requirement, with the substantive matter yet to be determined. The interim injunction remains in place pending further proceedings in the case.
