DVLA Cautions Public Against Fake SMS Fine Payment Scams

Story By: Deborah Adorsu

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority has warned the public against fraudulent SMS messages containing fake payment links designed to trick motorists into paying non-existent fines.

In a public notice issued on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, the Authority said it has observed activities of fraudsters who send unsolicited text messages to unsuspecting members of the public, directing them to fake online platforms where they are asked to pay supposed DVLA fines.

According to the DVLA, the scammers use pressure tactics, promising discounts on fines or imposing urgent payment deadlines to compel recipients to make payments without verification.

The Authority stressed that the messages are fraudulent and must be disregarded.”The DVLA does not offer discounts on fines. Any SMS, website, platform, or person claiming to offer discounted DVLA fines is fraudulent,” the statement said.

The DVLA clarified that the only acceptable online payment gateway for all its transactions is the Government of Ghana’s official payment platform, Ghana.gov.gh, and its official website remains.

It urged motorists not to click on suspicious links, share personal or financial information, or make payments through unofficial platforms claiming to represent the Authority.

The public is advised to verify all DVLA related information through its official website, recognised offices or approved communication channels.

The Authority also encouraged anyone who receives such suspicious SMS messages to report them to the nearest DVLA office or appropriate law enforcement agency for investigation.
