English Language Day: Celebrating the power of communication

Story by: Regina Bless

English Language Day is an occasion to celebrate the English language, its rich history, and its important role in communication, education, business, and international relations. It is observed annually on April 23 by the United Nations.

The date was chosen to coincide with the traditional birth and death anniversary of William Shakespeare, one of the most influential writers in the English language.

The Importance of the English Language

English is one of the most widely used languages in the world. It connects people from different countries, cultures, and backgrounds, making it easier for them to exchange ideas, share knowledge, and build relationships.

In Ghana, English serves as the official language and is used in schools, government institutions, the media, and many workplaces. It plays an important role in education and provides opportunities for people to communicate beyond their local communities.

English also gives people access to books, research, technology, and information from different parts of the world.

Promoting Proper Use of English

Although English is widely spoken, the ability to communicate effectively goes beyond knowing many words. Good communication requires proper grammar, clear pronunciation, correct spelling, and the ability to express ideas confidently.

Reading books, listening to educational programmes, practising conversations, and writing regularly can help improve English language skills.

However, celebrating English Language Day should not mean looking down on people who struggle with the language. Language is a skill that develops with practice, and people should be encouraged to learn without fear of embarrassment or discrimination.

It is also important to appreciate Ghana’s indigenous languages, including Twi, Ga, Ewe, Dagbani, and many others. These languages preserve our cultural identity, traditions, and history. Learning and speaking English should complement, rather than replace, our local languages.

The Role of Young People

Young people have an important role to play in promoting effective communication. In an era dominated by social media, abbreviations, slang, and informal expressions are common. While these have their place in casual conversations, young people should also understand when to use formal English, especially in academic, professional, and public settings.

Developing strong language skills can improve confidence, strengthen public speaking abilities, and create better educational and career opportunities.

English Language Day reminds us that language is more than a means of speaking; it is a tool for learning, connection, and opportunity. As we celebrate this day, let us commit to improving our communication skills while respecting the different languages and cultures that make our society unique.

The goal is not simply to speak English, but to communicate clearly, confidently, and respectfully.
