Former Minister of Defence Calls For Parliamentary Inquiry Into International Drug Busts Connected To Ghana

Former minister of defence who doubles as a Member of Parliament for Bimbilla , Dominic Nitiwul, is calling for a bipartisan parliamentary probe into recent international drug busts linked to Ghana.

In an interview, Mr. Nitiwul said the reports of narcotics interceptions abroad with links to Ghana are damaging to the country’s international reputation and require a transparent investigation.

According to him, the issue should not be politicized but treated as a national security concern that demands collective action from both sides of Parliament.

This follows the interception of a large drug consignment exported from Ghana, after French customs officials at the port of Dunkirk seized 3.9 metric tonnes of cocaine valued at $261 million, equivalent to €225 million, on September 10.

The illegal consignment was concealed in a container loaded with plastic waste, part of which was bound for Antwerp in Belgium.

The development has once again put the spotlight on Ghana as a key transit point for international drug cartels trafficking narcotics from South America to Europe and other parts of the world.
