GAF Hands Over 175.6km Right-Of-Way For Accra-Kumasi Expressway

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has completed the clearing of 175.6 kilometres of right-of-way for the proposed Accra-Kumasi Expressway, paving the way for the next phase of the major road project.

President John Dramani Mahama is scheduled to preside over the formal handover of the cleared corridor on Monday, September 14, 2026, at Kwaso near Ejisu in the Ashanti Region.

The right-of-way clearing was undertaken by engineers of the Ghana Armed Forces as part of preparations for the construction of the proposed expressway.

The project covers approximately 198.7 kilometres, linking Accra and Kumasi, two of Ghana’s most important economic centres.

The completion of the right-of-way clearing represents a significant preparatory step because it provides the space required for the planned road infrastructure and reduces one of the challenges that can delay major construction projects.

The Accra-Kumasi corridor is one of Ghana’s busiest transport routes and plays a major role in the movement of people and goods between the southern and middle parts of the country.

The proposed expressway is therefore expected to have implications for transportation, trade and connectivity when completed.

The Roads and Highways Minister, Governs Kwame Agbodza, has previously described the project as one of President Mahama’s major legacy road projects.

The government has also announced funding arrangements for the project under its infrastructure programme, with the Finance Minister stating earlier this year that $1.7 billion had been secured for the Accra-Kumasi Expressway.

With the right-of-way now largely cleared, attention is expected to shift towards the subsequent stages of the project, including construction.

The formal handover on Monday is consequently expected to mark an important milestone in government’s efforts to move the long-discussed Accra-Kumasi Expressway from preparation towards actual construction.
