The Government of Ghana has called for a thorough and transparent investigation into the death of a 24-year-old Ghanaian, Joseph Owusu, in New York, United States.
The call follows a visit by officials of Ghana’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York to the bereaved family after Joseph’s death under yet-to-be-explained circumstances.
According to a statement issued on November 4, 2026, the delegation, led by Deputy Permanent Representative Ben Dotsei Malor and Consul-General Anthony El-Adas, visited the family of the deceased, particularly his mother, Mavis, to convey the government’s condolences.
The visit was undertaken on behalf of Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who also spoke with the family and expressed the support and solidarity of President John Dramani Mahama and the government.
The minister described the incident as shocking and deeply saddening, particularly as it comes shortly after the killing of 15-year-old Ghanaian Javit in the Bronx, New York.
He assured the bereaved family that the Ghanaian government would work with relevant United States authorities to ensure that justice is served.
Joseph Owusu worked as a caregiver, providing support to persons with disabilities, and also served as a chorister at his local Methodist church. He is remembered by his family as a beloved son and brother.
His brother, Kwadwo, has appealed for a comprehensive and transparent police investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death, urging authorities to ensure that anyone found responsible is brought to justice.
Meanwhile, police have informed the family that an autopsy is being conducted as investigations into the incident continue.
The Ghanaian government has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the bereaved family and working with US authorities to establish the circumstances surrounding Joseph’s death.
