The Ghana High Commission in Pretoria has issued a security advisory to Ghanaians living, working or travelling in Johannesburg, Durban and surrounding areas following reports of ongoing protests that could disrupt public movement and pose potential security risks.

In a notice dated October 10, 2026, the High Commission warned that demonstrations had been reported in the central business districts of Johannesburg and Durban, with protesters in Johannesburg expected to converge on the Constitutional Court.

The protests could lead to significant traffic disruptions, road closures, restricted movement and possible confrontations between demonstrators and law enforcement authorities.

In response to the situation, the High Commission has urged Ghanaian nationals in the affected areas to exercise heightened vigilance and take precautionary measures to protect their safety.

Ghanaians have been advised to avoid protest locations, large gatherings and areas experiencing public disturbances. They have also been encouraged to limit non-essential travel to the Johannesburg and Durban central business districts until the situation stabilises.

The advisory further cautioned residents to anticipate road closures, use alternative routes where necessary and monitor local news, official traffic updates and security announcements issued by the South African Police Service and relevant municipal authorities.

The High Commission also advised Ghanaians to avoid confrontations with protesters, remain in regular contact with family members and community leaders, and report any threats, intimidation or incidents of violence to the nearest police station.

Those requiring consular assistance have been encouraged to contact the Ghana High Commission for support.

The diplomatic mission further urged members of the Ghanaian community to remain calm, exercise restraint and comply with lawful instructions from South African security and law enforcement authorities.

It also cautioned against circulating unverified information that could create unnecessary fear or panic within the community.

The High Commission stressed that the safety, security and welfare of all Ghanaian nationals in South Africa remain a top priority, urging citizens to remain alert and follow official updates as developments unfold.
