Ghana remembers Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah on his birthday

Ghana today remembers Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, the country’s first Prime Minister and first President, as the nation marks his birthday.

Born on 21 September 1909, Dr. Nkrumah became a central figure in Ghana’s struggle for independence from British colonial rule. Ghana attained independence on 6 March 1957, becoming the first sub-Saharan African country to achieve independence from colonial rule.

Nkrumah’s political vision extended beyond Ghana. He strongly advocated for Pan-African unity, believing that the political and economic cooperation of African states was essential to the continent’s development and independence.

His administration also pursued major programmes in education, infrastructure, industrialisation and economic development as part of efforts to transform the newly independent nation.

Decades after his death in 1972, Nkrumah remains a prominent figure in Ghanaian and African history, with his ideas on African unity, self-determination and development continuing to feature in discussions about the continent’s future.

On his birthday, tributes continue to honour his role in Ghana’s independence struggle and his contribution to the Pan-African movement.
