GHS director-general visits Savannah Region to assess public health emergency preparedness

Story by: Regina Bless

The Director-General of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), Dr. Samuel Kaba Akoriyea, has visited the Savannah Regional Health Directorate in Damongo to engage regional health leaders and assess the region’s preparedness for public health emergencies.

The visit took place while he was travelling to the Upper West Region to monitor the post-yellow fever reactive vaccination exercise.

During the brief stop, Dr. Akoriyea met with the Regional Director of Health Service and members of the management team to discuss key health service delivery issues and the need for stronger collaboration to improve health outcomes.

As part of the visit, the Director-General toured the Regional Public Health Emergency Operations Centre (PHEOC) to assess its preparedness and capacity to coordinate responses to potential disease outbreaks and other public health emergencies.

The assessment forms part of efforts to ensure that regional health teams have the necessary systems and coordination mechanisms to identify, manage and respond promptly to public health threats.

The Ghana Health Service continues to emphasise the importance of strengthening emergency response systems and improving preparedness across the country to protect public health.

The visit underscores the need for effective leadership, collaboration and continuous assessment of emergency response structures to build a resilient healthcare system capable of responding to emerging health threats.

Preparedness today, a stronger response tomorrow!
