Gov’t Considers Dedicated Lanes For Aayalolo Buses To Tackle Accra Traffic Congestion

The Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga, has proposed the creation of dedicated lanes for Aayalolo buses during peak hours to enhance their efficiency and reliability.

According to the Minister, the move is aimed at improving public transportation in the capital and addressing the worsening traffic congestion that continues to affect commuters and productivity.

He explained that Aayalolo buses, which are designed to move large numbers of people quickly, are currently forced to compete for road space with private cars and commercial trotros, causing delays and operational losses.

Mr. Ayariga said that if approved by the government, the dedicated lane initiative would give priority to buses on major corridors during morning and evening rush hours, allowing them to move faster and keep to schedule.

He added that such a policy, if properly enforced, would not only improve mobility but also encourage more private car owners to patronize public buses, thereby reducing the number of vehicles on the road.

The proposal comes at a time when management of Aayalolo has bemoaned slow speeds due to congestion and called for stronger lane enforcement to restore the time-saving advantage of the BRT system once offered by commuters.
