Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has paid an unannounced working visit to the Weija-Gbawe Children’s Specialist Hospital to assess its operations and progress since the facility commenced operations in August 2026.

The 120-bed facility, which began operations on August 17, 2026, is currently providing outpatient and emergency services as it gradually expands into inpatient care.

During the visit, Mr Akandoh expressed satisfaction with the progress made so far and directed the immediate deployment of 10 medical doctors and 30 nurses and midwives to strengthen the hospital’s workforce and support the expansion of services.

The Minister said most of the equipment required at the facility had been installed and urged management and staff to ensure the proper maintenance of the hospital and its equipment while treating patients with dignity and respect.

He also indicated that the Ministry would continue to monitor the facility closely, given its importance to specialised paediatric healthcare delivery.

The hospital is expected to serve as a specialised referral centre for children and help improve access to quality healthcare for newborns, children and adolescents in Weija-Gbawe and surrounding communities. The facility has also received accreditation under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

Mr Akandoh further noted that outstanding issues between the government and the contractor were being resolved, stressing that the priority was to ensure the facility is fully operational and put to effective use for the benefit of Ghanaians.
