Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has disclosed that the government inherited an ambulance fleet in which none of the vehicles was insured, with several ambulances also grounded when the administration assumed office.

Speaking on Joy News’ PM Express, the Minister said the government addressed the insurance situation in 2025 by insuring the ambulances. He acknowledged concerns from the public about ambulance availability but said the situation has since improved significantly.

According to Akandoh, more than 200 ambulances are currently functioning across the country.

He further revealed that government plans to add 100 brand-new ambulances in 2027 as part of efforts to strengthen Ghana’s emergency medical response.

The Minister said government has not yet made a final decision on whether the new ambulances will be distributed under the previous “One Constituency, One Ambulance” model. He suggested that priority could instead be given to areas where existing ambulances have become faulty or non-functional.

Akandoh said the government is assessing the strengths and weaknesses of the previous distribution system before deciding whether to maintain or review it.

The development comes as ambulance availability remains an important public-health issue, particularly for patients in emergencies who depend on timely transportation to health facilities.
