IFC Managing Director Makhtar Diop Begins Ghana Visit

By Zainab Ali

The Managing Director of the International Finance Corporation (IFC), Makhtar Diop, is expected in Ghana from September 15 to 17, 2026, for a series of engagements with government officials, business leaders and other stakeholders.

The visit is expected to focus on strengthening Ghana’s private sector, improving business competitiveness, expanding access to finance and creating more employment opportunities.

According to the Ghana News Agency, Diop will meet senior government officials and engage business leaders, entrepreneurs, civil society organisations, academic institutions and stakeholders within Ghana’s creative economy.

Discussions are expected to explore opportunities and challenges affecting private-sector growth and how the World Bank Group can provide additional support for Ghana’s economic transformation.

Key areas expected to feature during the visit include agribusiness, education, youth employment and skills development, access to finance, industrial development, renewable energy and the creative economy.

The IFC has been involved in supporting businesses in Ghana through investments and advisory services, with particular attention to access to finance and strengthening domestic value chains.

The corporation reported that its total commitments to Ghana through its own account and mobilisation efforts reached US$670 million in the 2026 financial year, compared with US$61 million recorded in the 2021 financial year.

The visit comes as Ghana continues to seek increased private investment and stronger partnerships to support economic growth, job creation and business expansion.

For entrepreneurs and businesses, the engagements could provide an opportunity to highlight challenges affecting the private sector and identify areas where additional investment and institutional support could make a difference.
