Interior Minister Bans Arms And Ammunition At Hamile Following Deadly Explosion
Story By: Zainab Ali
The Minister for the Interior, Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka, has imposed a total ban on the carrying of arms, ammunition and other offensive weapons in Hamile Township and its surrounding communities in the Lambussie District of the Upper West Region following a deadly explosion that claimed the life of a Ghana Immigration Service officer.
The directive, announced on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, forms part of emergency security measures introduced by the government to restore calm and address security concerns in the border community.
According to a statement from the Ministry of the Interior, anyone found carrying arms or ammunition in the affected area will be arrested and prosecuted.
The government has also imposed a curfew on Hamile and its surrounding communities, restricting movement between 6:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. daily, with immediate effect.
The measures follow an explosion involving a motor tricycle reportedly transporting suspected dynamite along an unauthorised route in Hamile.
Preliminary reports indicate that security personnel attempted to intercept the tricycle after its occupants allegedly failed to stop at a checkpoint, leading to a pursuit that ended in the explosion.
The blast reportedly killed one Immigration Service officer and left another critically injured. The civilians travelling on the tricycle were also reported dead.
The circumstances surrounding the incident, including the full details of the suspected explosives and the events leading to the explosion, remain under investigation.
In response to the incident, the government has appealed to traditional authorities, opinion leaders, young people and residents to exercise restraint and avoid actions that could worsen tensions in the area.
The Ministry has urged residents to channel their grievances through peaceful and lawful means as security agencies work to maintain order.
Hamile is a strategic border community near Ghana’s frontier with Burkina Faso, making security enforcement and the monitoring of unauthorised cross-border movements important concerns for the authorities.
The weapons ban and curfew are intended to help prevent further violence while the security situation is addressed.
