International Music Day
Story by: Regina Bless
International Music Day, celebrated on October 1, is a day dedicated to recognizing the power and importance of music in our lives. It brings together musicians, artists, music lovers and communities to celebrate music in its many forms.
Music is more than entertainment. It can express emotions, preserve culture, tell stories and bring people from different backgrounds together. From traditional African rhythms to highlife, gospel, reggae, hip-hop, Afrobeats and classical music, music continues to play an important role in shaping societies and connecting generations.
The day also provides an opportunity to appreciate the hard work of musicians, producers, songwriters, instrumentalists, DJs and other professionals who contribute to the music industry.
In Ghana, music is deeply connected to our culture and identity. Ghanaian genres such as highlife and hiplife, alongside contemporary Afrobeats and gospel music, have helped introduce Ghanaian sounds and stories to audiences around the world.
As we celebrate International Music Day, it is a good time to support local musicians, discover different genres and appreciate the ability of music to unite, inspire, educate and entertain.
