International Translation Day: Celebrating the power of language

Every year on September 30, the world observes International Translation Day to recognise the important role translators and language professionals play in connecting people and cultures.

Translation makes it possible for people who speak different languages to communicate, share knowledge and understand one another. It is important in areas such as education, healthcare, business, diplomacy, law, media and international relations.

The day also highlights the work of translators, interpreters and other language professionals who help make information accessible across language barriers. Their work goes beyond simply changing words from one language to another; it often requires an understanding of culture, context and meaning.

For countries such as Ghana, where many local languages exist alongside English and other international languages, translation can contribute to greater inclusion. Making important information available in languages people understand can help communities participate more effectively in society.

International Translation Day therefore reminds us that language should not be a barrier to knowledge or communication. It celebrates the professionals who help bring people together and demonstrates how effective communication can promote understanding and cooperation across borders.

Translation connects languages, but more importantly, it connects people.
