Vice President Prof. Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang has joined the Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana (PSG) to commemorate the opening of its 90th anniversary celebrations and Annual General Meeting.

The anniversary is being held under the theme, “Science. Impact. Legacy: 90 Years of Pharmaceutical Excellence.”
Addressing the gathering, Prof. Opoku Agyemang highlighted the important role pharmacists play in Ghana’s healthcare system, noting that they remain among the most accessible and visible health professionals to many Ghanaians.
She said the competence, integrity and professional standards of healthcare workers will remain critical as government expands initiatives such as Free Primary Healthcare and the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, popularly known as MahamaCares.
The Vice President also highlighted government’s ambition to increase local pharmaceutical manufacturing to 70 percent within the next five years. She said the initiative could create opportunities for employment, research, innovation and economic growth while reducing Ghana’s dependence on imported medicines.

She stressed, however, that increased local production must go hand in hand with strict quality standards, noting that medicines manufactured in Ghana should meet rigorous requirements and be capable of competing in international markets.

Prof. Opoku Agyemang congratulated the Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana on reaching its 90-year milestone and expressed confidence that the profession would continue to contribute significantly to building a stronger, more innovative and increasingly self-reliant healthcare system.

The anniversary celebration provides an opportunity to reflect on the pharmaceutical profession’s contribution to Ghana’s healthcare development while looking ahead to its role in advancing local production, research and quality healthcare delivery.
