Kontomire Is More Than A Favourite Ghanaian Food — Here’s Why It Deserves A Place On Your Plate
By Zainab Ali
For generations, kontomire has been a familiar part of Ghanaian meals.
Whether prepared as stew, added to sauces or served alongside traditional dishes, cocoyam leaves remain a favourite in many Ghanaian homes.
But beyond its popularity, nutrition experts have also highlighted the nutritional value of kontomire.
A recent report cited University of Ghana Medical Centre dietitian Emelia Dery Gbogr as saying that cocoyam leaves can offer greater nutritional value in some areas than commonly consumed vegetables such as spinach and broccoli.
That makes the leafy vegetable worth more attention at a time when many people are becoming increasingly conscious of what they put on their plates.
Kontomire can form part of a balanced diet and can be prepared in different ways, making it a practical option for households looking to include more vegetables in their meals.
Its popularity also reflects something important about Ghanaian food culture: nutritious meals do not always have to be imported or expensive.
Traditional foods can provide valuable nutrients while remaining familiar and accessible to many households.
However, preparation matters. Adding excessive amounts of oil, salt or other ingredients can change the nutritional profile of a meal.
The bigger lesson is simple: healthy eating does not necessarily mean abandoning traditional Ghanaian foods.
Sometimes, the foods that have been sitting in our kitchens for generations may already have a valuable place in a balanced diet.
And perhaps kontomire deserves a little more respect than simply being the vegetable we grew up eating.
