Private legal practitioner and member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Communications Team, Lawyer Bernard Owiredu Donkor, has declared his intention to contest the party’s parliamentary primaries in the Akwatia Constituency ahead of the 2028 general elections.
Mr. Owiredu Donkor, a native of Akwatia, made the declaration in an interview on the sidelines of the party’s Thanksgiving Service and Mini Conference/Rally in Akwatia on Sunday, November 1, 2026.
According to him, the NPP needs a formidable candidate who has the capacity to win back the Akwatia seat from the National Democratic Congress (NDC), stressing that the party cannot afford to experiment again.
Mr. Owiredu Donkor disclosed that he will formally register his interest through the party’s new online declaration-of-interest portal,
http://PPC.nppghana.org, which opened on November 1 and will close on November 10, 2026.
The portal requires a non-refundable fee of GH¢5,000.
He said he supported the NPP’s candidate, Solomon Kwame Asumadu, during the September 2, 2025 Akwatia by-election, but argued that the party must adopt a different strategy to reclaim the constituency.
The Akwatia seat became vacant following the death of NPP MP Ernest Yaw Kumi in July 2025. In the subsequent by-election, the NDC’s Bernard Bediako Baidoo won with 18,199 votes against Asumadu’s 15,235 votes.
Lawyer Owiredu Donkor is not new to Akwatia politics.
He previously contested the NPP primaries in the constituency and has served as PRO for the Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers Association and Akyem Kusi Electoral Area Coordinator for the NPP. He holds an LLB from Mount Crest University and an MBA in Corporate Governance from UPSA.
The NPP has warned that declaration of intent does not amount to opening of nominations and that aspirants are still barred from campaigning.
