Mahama Announces Phased Ban On Raw Mineral Exports By 2030

Story By: Zainab Ali

President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans for a phased ban on the export of raw minerals by 2030, reinforcing the government’s push for Ghana to process more of its mineral resources locally.

The announcement signals a policy direction aimed at encouraging domestic value addition instead of relying primarily on the export of unprocessed resources.

Processing minerals within Ghana could create opportunities for industrial investment, skilled employment and the development of businesses that supply the mining and manufacturing sectors. It could also help the country retain a greater share of the economic value generated from its natural resources.

However, the success of such a policy will depend on investment in processing facilities, reliable electricity, infrastructure, technical expertise and an environment that supports local manufacturers.

Businesses may also need time to adjust to new requirements.
The proposed transition is significant for a country whose mineral sector plays an important role in export earnings.
