President John Dramani Mahama has called on African countries to develop homegrown solutions to the continent’s peace and security challenges, stressing the importance of economic sovereignty, self-reliance and stronger regional cooperation.

President Mahama, who serves as Chairperson of the Tana Forum Board, made the call while delivering the welcome remarks at the 12th Tana High-Level Forum on Security in Africa in Bahir Dar, Ethiopia.

He emphasised that sustainable peace and security could only be achieved when African countries take greater responsibility for their own development and security priorities.

According to him, the continent must strengthen its domestic industrial capacity and develop the financial resources needed to address its security challenges without excessive dependence on external support.

President Mahama also urged African leaders to move beyond structural dependency by strengthening trade among African countries and promoting collective efforts towards economic growth and stability.

He noted that stronger cooperation among African nations would be essential in building a peaceful, prosperous and sovereign continent capable of determining its own future.

The Tana High-Level Forum on Security in Africa brings together African leaders, policymakers, security experts and other stakeholders to discuss pressing peace and security issues affecting the continent.

President Mahama’s remarks highlight the need for African countries to take ownership of their development, strengthen regional partnerships and invest in sustainable solutions to the challenges confronting the continent.
