Mahama calls for stronger accountability and performance in State-Owned Enterprises

President John Dramani Mahama has called for greater accountability, improved performance and stronger governance across Ghana’s State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs).

Speaking at the SIGA Governing Boards and CEOs Conference, President Mahama urged Governing Boards and Chief Executive Officers to maintain a clear distinction between their respective responsibilities, stressing that effective governance depends on clearly defined roles.

He cautioned Board Chairpersons against taking on full-time executive responsibilities within the organisations they are mandated to oversee. According to him, maintaining the separation between governance and management is essential to ensuring proper oversight and accountability.

President Mahama further explained that the government’s approach to remuneration is not limited to controlling salaries. Rather, it is focused on establishing appropriate incentives that encourage performance, strengthen accountability and ensure value for money.

He emphasised the need for SOEs to operate efficiently and deliver tangible results, noting that strong governance and responsible management are critical to improving the contribution of state-owned institutions to Ghana’s economic development.

The President’s remarks come as efforts continue to strengthen the governance and performance of SOEs and ensure that public resources are managed responsibly for the benefit of Ghanaians.
