Mahama commissions expanded Zonda Tec Vehicle Assembly plant in Tema

President John Dramani Mahama has commissioned Phase Three of the Zonda Tec Ghana Limited vehicle assembly plant in Tema, describing the expansion as an important milestone in Ghana’s industrialisation drive.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, President Mahama reaffirmed Government’s commitment to developing a stronger domestic automotive industry based on local production, skills development and increased value addition.
The President said Ghana must move beyond simply assembling vehicles with imported components and work towards an integrated automotive supply chain in which Ghanaian businesses produce components and provide services to manufacturers.
He called for greater investment in the local production of batteries, tyres, wiring harnesses, seats, glass, plastics and metal components. According to the President, strengthening local component manufacturing would create opportunities for small and medium-sized enterprises, generate employment and retain more value within Ghana.
President Mahama also highlighted the potential of Ghana’s strategic minerals, including lithium, and its growing renewable energy capacity to support the development of battery production and electric mobility. He outlined a broader vision of linking minerals to batteries, vehicles and eventually exports.
The President further stressed the importance of creating stronger demand for locally assembled vehicles and called for accessible, longer-term vehicle financing to help more Ghanaians acquire locally produced automobiles.
The Phase Three expansion increases Zonda Tec’s production capacity, with government sources putting the additional heavy- and light-duty vehicle capacity at approximately 3,000 units annually. Reports also indicate that the facility has created more than 800 direct jobs, with the expansion expected to generate further employment across supporting industries.
The development forms part of Ghana’s broader efforts to deepen manufacturing, promote local value addition and position the country as a competitive automotive production base in West Africa.
