President John Dramani Mahama has granted presidential pardon to 863 convicted persons as part of activities commemorating Ghana’s 70th Independence Anniversary.

The decision was taken under Article 72(1) of the 1992 Constitution, following consultation with the Council of State. The Presidency said the gesture is intended to mark the national milestone through an act of mercy and reflection.

The largest group comprises 819 first offenders, who have been granted outright release. The pardon also covers 13 persons aged 70 years and above and six seriously ill persons, all of whom are to be released.

Additionally, 11 death sentences will be commuted to life imprisonment, while the sentences of six people serving life terms will be reduced to 20 years. Two others will receive outright release following special recommendations, while three cases were approved through petitions and another three fall under other categories.

The Presidency has directed the relevant state institutions to take the necessary steps to implement the President’s decision.

The exercise highlights the constitutional prerogative of mercy and forms part of Ghana’s preparations to commemorate its 70th Independence Anniversary on March 6, 2027.
