Mahama To Commission Agbogbloshie Waste Evacuation Exercise

President John Dramani Mahama is expected to commission an exercise to evacuate accumulated waste from Agbogbloshie in Accra on Friday, September 18, 2026.

The exercise will involve the transportation of waste from Agbogbloshie to the Adepa Landfill Site at Nsawam, a distance of approximately 42 kilometres.

According to 3News, the exercise is being organised by the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralisation and Rural Development in collaboration with the Ghana Armed Forces, with support from the District Road Improvement Programme.

The commissioning ceremony is scheduled to take place at the IRECOP Management Centre in Jamestown, Accra.

The initiative forms part of ongoing efforts to address sanitation and waste-management challenges in the capital.

Agbogbloshie has for years been associated with serious environmental and sanitation concerns, making waste evacuation an important part of efforts to improve conditions in the area.

The exercise is expected to involve the movement of accumulated waste to a designated landfill site rather than leaving the refuse in the area.

Authorities say the exercise is intended to contribute to improved sanitation and environmental conditions around Agbogbloshie.

The involvement of multiple state institutions also highlights the scale of the operation, particularly the logistical requirements involved in transporting large quantities of waste from Accra to Nsawam.

The commissioning marks the beginning of the latest effort by government and relevant agencies to tackle accumulated waste and improve sanitation in the capital.
