President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to appeal to Russian President Vladimir Putin to agree to a ceasefire in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war during his planned visit to Russia for the Russia-Africa Summit.

The President made the disclosure during an interview at the Financial Times Africa Summit in London, where he discussed Russia’s military involvement in the Sahel region and the importance of international cooperation in the fight against terrorism.

Addressing questions about Russian military units supporting some governments in the Sahel, President Mahama said countries should be allowed to receive assistance from any partner committed to combating terrorism.

“My opinion is that anybody who is committed to the fight against terrorism is welcome,” he stated.

He cited Ghana’s security partnerships with the United Kingdom, Germany, France and the United States, explaining that the country shares intelligence and conducts joint training exercises with these international partners.

President Mahama also reaffirmed Ghana’s non-alignment policy, emphasising the country’s commitment to maintaining cordial relations with nations across the world, including Russia.

“We are friends to all and enemies to none,” he said.

Against this backdrop, the President indicated that he intends to use his planned participation in the Russia-Africa Summit as an opportunity to engage President Putin on the need to halt the fighting in Ukraine.

“Indeed, I’m going to Russia for the Russia-Africa summit and try to convince President Putin to have a ceasefire if I can,” he stated.

The Russia-Ukraine war began in February 2022 following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The conflict has resulted in significant loss of life, displacement and widespread destruction, while diplomatic efforts to end the hostilities have yet to secure a lasting resolution.

President Mahama’s proposed engagement with President Putin would provide an opportunity for Ghana to express its position on the conflict and encourage renewed diplomatic efforts towards a ceasefire and a peaceful resolution.
