Mahama urges Ghanaians to uphold Nkrumah’s legacy on Founder’s Day

President John Dramani Mahama has urged Ghanaians to reflect on the vision and enduring legacy of Ghana’s first President, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, as the country commemorates Founder’s Day.

In a message shared on social media on Monday, September 21, President Mahama said the occasion provides an opportunity for Ghanaians both at home and abroad to remember Nkrumah’s significant role in the struggle for independence and his wider vision for Africa.

According to Mahama, Nkrumah’s dedication to freedom, Pan-African unity and self-reliance helped establish Ghana as a symbol of hope and possibility internationally. He added that Nkrumah’s belief in Africans’ ability to govern and manage their own affairs continues to shape Ghana’s national identity and aspirations.

The President said Founder’s Day should not only be about remembering Nkrumah’s achievements but should also remind citizens of the work that remains to be done in building the nation.

While acknowledging that Ghana achieved political independence under Nkrumah’s leadership, Mahama stressed that the broader objective of creating a prosperous, fair and inclusive society remains unfinished.

He therefore called on Ghanaians to draw inspiration from Nkrumah’s principles and apply them to the country’s present development efforts. He urged citizens to put aside divisions, demonstrate patriotism and contribute to efforts aimed at achieving economic freedom and social justice.

Mahama also drew a connection between Nkrumah’s struggle for political independence and Ghana’s present pursuit of economic and social progress. He said that, just as the country’s first President fought to secure political freedom, Ghanaians today have a shared responsibility to build a prosperous, equitable and resilient nation.
