A delegation from Malawi, led by the country’s Minister for Mines, Hon. Thokozani Tembo, has paid a working visit to the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) to learn about Ghana’s gold sector reforms and explore strategies to strengthen Malawi’s gold industry.

The visit focused on Ghana’s approach to gold licensing, pricing mechanisms and measures to combat gold smuggling, as Malawi seeks to improve the management and regulation of its own gold sector.

During the engagement, GoldBod’s Director of Responsible Mining and Sustainability, Prof. Ishmael Quaicoe, briefed the delegation on the Board’s licensing framework, standardised pricing system and monitoring mechanisms designed to promote transparency and accountability in the gold trade.

Prof. Quaicoe also highlighted the performance of Ghana’s artisanal and small-scale mining sector, revealing that approximately 104 tonnes of gold were mobilised in 2025, generating about US$10.8 billion in gross export proceeds.

The figures underscore the contribution of artisanal and small-scale gold mining to Ghana’s gold exports and foreign exchange earnings.

The engagement provided an opportunity for the Malawian delegation to gain insights into Ghana’s regulatory approach, particularly in formalising gold trading activities, improving traceability and addressing illegal gold transactions.

The visit reflects growing interest in Ghana’s gold sector management framework and offers an avenue for knowledge-sharing between the two African countries as Malawi explores measures to strengthen regulation, improve revenue mobilisation and promote transparency in its mining industry.
