Military demolition at La Beach sparks tension
Story by: Regina Bless
The military has commenced the demolition of structures around La Beach as part of an ongoing exercise to clear the area.
Military personnel overseeing the operation have directed vendors and businesses operating within the resort to vacate the premises to allow the exercise to continue.
The demolition has, however, triggered resistance from the Member of Parliament for La Dadekotopon, Rita Naa Odoley Sowah, who confronted the military personnel at the site.
The MP questioned why the exercise was being carried out without prior communication to her. According to her, she had engaged relevant government authorities and was assured that the structures would not be demolished.
She said she was therefore surprised to arrive at the site and find military personnel carrying out the exercise.
Ms. Sowah also raised concerns about the conduct of the operation, alleging that some military personnel were firing shots and wielding guns at people at the site.
Expressing her frustration, she questioned the reason for the operation, asking, “What is it, do you want to kill us, what has La done?”
The development has created tension at the La Beach area as the demolition exercise continues.
