Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo Markin has called for a strict examination of Ghana’s border security systems and institutional oversight.
Speaking at a Leaders Media Briefing ahead of Parliament’s resumption on Tuesday, the Effutu MP said the pattern of interceptions abroad could no longer be treated as isolated criminal cases.
He pointed to the interception of about 3.9 tonnes of cocaine at the Port of Dunkirk in France on September 7, valued at about €225 million and reportedly concealed in plastic waste shipped from Ghana.
He also listed seizures in Amsterdam, Antwerp and Sydney, alongside suspected interceptions within Ghana.
These developments, according to him, he recent seizures cast doubt on the strength of the country’s port security system, cargo inspection procedures, customs controls, intelligence coordination, and the broader institutional framework for combating transnational organised crime.
