The Narcotics Control Commission, NACOC, has destroyed seized narcotic drugs with an estimated street value of more than US$10 million at Bundase in the Greater Accra Region.
The drugs destroyed included 564.39 kilogrammes of cannabis valued at US$112,878, 4,730,100 capsules and tablets of synthetic opioids estimated at US$5,912,625, and 338,000 bottles of codeine-infused cough mixture valued at US$4,225,000.
The Ghana Standards Authority verified the authenticity of the seized substances ahead of their destruction, with tests confirming the presence of cannabis in the samples.
The exercise was carried out in accordance with the Narcotics Control Commission Act, 2020, Act 1019, which mandates NACOC to seize, investigate, prosecute and destroy narcotic drugs after following all legal procedures, including securing a court order and destruction certificate.
Speaking to the media after the exercise, NACOC Director-General, Major General Maxwell Obuba Mantey, said the Commission remained committed to the fight against narcotics despite a recent drug seizure in Lebanon linked to Ghana.
He said NACOC will continue to intensify operations at the ports, borders and inland checkpoints to make Ghana unattractive to drug traffickers.
He also warned drug peddlers and traffickers that the Commission will not relent in its efforts to seize illicit drugs, prosecute offenders and destroy contraband.
The destruction was witnessed by officials of the court, Ghana Standards Authority, Environmental Protection Agency, National Security, National Intelligence Bureau, Customs, Police, Military and other partner agencies.
NACOC urged the public to support the fight against drug trafficking and abuse by providing credible information on drug-related activities in their communities.
