National Healthy Eating Day

Story by: Regina Bless

National Healthy Eating Day is observed to encourage people to make healthier food choices and develop eating habits that promote good health and prevent diseases.

Healthy eating is not simply about eating less food or avoiding certain meals. It is about giving the body the right nutrients it needs to function properly. This includes eating a balanced diet containing fruits, vegetables, whole grains, proteins and healthy fats, while limiting excessive sugar, salt and unhealthy fats.

In Ghana, where many people enjoy meals such as banku, fufu, kenkey, rice and waakye, healthy eating does not mean abandoning our traditional foods. Rather, it means paying attention to portion sizes, including vegetables in our meals and choosing healthier cooking methods.

Health experts emphasise that poor eating habits can increase the risk of non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, obesity and certain heart conditions. Eating well can also improve energy levels, support brain function and strengthen the immune system.

However, healthy eating goes beyond the food on our plates. Drinking enough water, eating regularly, maintaining an active lifestyle and getting adequate sleep are also important parts of maintaining good health.

As we mark National Healthy Eating Day, individuals, families, schools and workplaces are encouraged to make healthier food choices and educate others about the importance of proper nutrition.

Remember, eating healthy is not a one-day activity; it is a lifestyle choice that can contribute to a longer, healthier and more productive life.
