Nigeria gains independence from British colonial rule

Story by: Regina Bless

On October 1, 1960, Nigeria gained independence from British colonial rule, marking a major turning point in the country’s history. The day is now celebrated annually as Nigeria’s Independence Day.

Before independence, Nigeria was administered as a British colony and protectorate. The country gradually moved towards self-government as Nigerian political leaders and citizens pushed for greater representation and control over their own affairs.

On October 1, 1960, Nigeria officially became an independent nation. Nnamdi Azikiwe later became Nigeria’s first Governor-General and, following the country becoming a republic in 1963, its first President.

Nigeria’s independence was part of a wider wave of African countries gaining freedom from European colonial rule during the 20th century. For Nigerians, October 1 remains a day to reflect on the country’s history, achievements, challenges and aspirations for the future.

More than six decades later, Nigeria’s Independence Day continues to serve as a reminder of the importance of national unity, self-determination and the responsibility of citizens to contribute to the development of their country.
