The Northern Regional Police Command has arrested four suspects and recovered 142 parcels of suspected Indian hemp following an intelligence-led operation by its Special Operations Team, known as Red Maria. The officers also rejected an alleged GH¢50,000 bribe offered by the suspects.

According to a press release issued by the Northern Regional Police Command on Friday, October 16, 2026, the operation took place on Thursday, October 15, at about 6:30 p.m., when the team intercepted a mini commercial van travelling from Bimbilla to Tamale.

The vehicle, with registration number GW 7800-14, was being driven by 46-year-old Alhassan Zeblim, who was suspected of transporting narcotic substances.

A search of the van uncovered 142 compressed parcels of suspected Indian hemp concealed in four jute sacks commonly known as Ghana Must Go bags.

Police investigations revealed that the driver claimed he was transporting the consignment to 34-year-old Ibrahim Yussif, a tricycle rider in Tamale. Ibrahim later arrived at an agreed location accompanied by his brother, 56-year-old Bawa Yussif.

A third suspect, 32-year-old Mohammed Haruna, was subsequently identified as the alleged owner of the consignment. All four suspects were arrested in connection with the incident.

The police said the suspects allegedly attempted to influence the arresting officers with a GH¢50,000 bribe, but the officers rejected the offer, demonstrating what the Command described as integrity and professionalism.

The suspects, together with the exhibits, including a tricycle, have since been handed over to the Regional Drug Law Enforcement Unit (DLEU) for further investigation.

The Northern Regional Police Command commended the officers for their swift response and integrity, while encouraging other personnel across the region to uphold similar standards in the fight against drug-related offences.

The press release was signed by DCOP Wisdom Lavoe, Northern Regional Police Commander.
