NPA Says Ghana Is Ready To Manage Pressure In Fuel Market

The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) says it is prepared to manage renewed pressure in Ghana’s downstream petroleum sector as international market conditions continue to push up the cost of crude oil and refined petroleum products.
NPA Chief Executive Officer Godwin Edudzi Tamakloe said the authority has been preparing for possible disruptions in the petroleum market, particularly because Ghana depends heavily on imported refined petroleum products.
The latest pressure comes after the NPA increased the price floor for petrol to GH¢16 per litre and diesel to GH¢16.77 per litre from September 16, 2026. Some oil marketing companies subsequently adjusted their pump prices.
According to Mr Tamakloe, fluctuations in international markets can have a direct impact on Ghana because of the country’s dependence on imported petroleum products.
He explained that managing such pressure has been part of the NPA’s responsibility, adding that the authority has been working to deal with the challenges since February.
The NPA boss acknowledged that the sector is experiencing turbulence but said the authority believes it has been responding to the situation.
The development is being closely watched by motorists, transport operators, businesses and households because changes in fuel prices can affect transportation and the cost of other goods and services.
The NPA’s position comes as stakeholders continue to monitor developments in the international petroleum market and their possible impact on prices at Ghanaian fuel stations.
