NPP questions appointment of new EC Deputy Chair over alleged NDC ties

Story By: Deborah Adorsu

The Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has raised concerns about the appointment of Emilia Afi Agbenyo as a Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission.

Speaking on the matter, the communication director alleged alleged Mrs Agbenyo is a known member of the National Democratic Congress with ties to the party.

He argued, her appointment to an independent constitutional body mandated to oversee elections compromises the neutrality expected of the Electoral Commission.

According to him, the Electoral Commission must be seen to be independent and impartial.
He called on government to reconsider the appointment in the interest of public confidence in the electoral process.

This was after President John Dramani Mahama appointed Emelia Afi Agbenyo, Deputy Director for Operations at the Ghana TVET Service, and Dr Joseph Kweku Asamoah, a former Director of Finance at the Electoral Commission (EC), as Deputy Chairpersons of the Electoral Commission.
Dr Asamoah, a law lecturer at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), previously held senior positions at the EC, including Director of Finance, Director of the Training Centre and Head of Audit.

Their appointments follow changes in the commission’s senior leadership, including the resignation of Dr Bossman Asare, who was responsible for Corporate Affairs, effective July 31, 2026, and the retirement of Samuel Tettey, the former Deputy Chairperson in charge of Operations, upon reaching the mandatory retirement age.

The appointments are expected to fill the vacancies created by the departures and strengthen the commission’s leadership as it carries out its electoral responsibilities.

Despite allegations from the Minority that she is affiliated to the NDC, President Mahama has charged the newly appointed Electoral Commission officials to serve with impartiality, integrity and a strong commitment to democratic credibility.

Presidential staffer Beatrice Annan adding her voice, said the presidency followed the constitutional procedure for the appointments under Article 70(2) and Article 74 of the 1992 constitution.
