Obuasi SHTS Abuse Allegations: Education Ministry Promises Justice For 19 Girls

Story By: Zainab Ali

The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has pledged that allegations of sexual abuse involving 19 female students of Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS) will be addressed through the appropriate administrative and legal processes.

Speaking to the press on Monday, October 26, 2026, the minister assured the public that the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service (GES) would take the necessary steps to protect students and ensure accountability.

The allegations involve the school’s suspended headmaster, Zakaria Abdulai. The case has generated widespread public concern and renewed calls for stronger safeguards to protect students in educational institutions.

Mr Iddrisu said the government would not allow the matter to fade from public attention without appropriate action. He also indicated that the affected students would receive trauma-informed support to help address the psychological and emotional effects associated with the allegations.

As part of efforts to strengthen student protection, the minister directed the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service to ensure that students were not made to perform domestic duties for headmasters or teachers. The ministry also intends to review school regulations and strengthen monitoring of the conduct of teachers and school administrators.

The Gender Minister, Dr Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, has separately assured students and parents that security measures have been put in place following the school’s reopening. She has urged students who have not returned to campus to do so, emphasising the importance of providing a safe learning environment.

The case has also prompted calls for improved reporting systems that allow students to raise concerns without fear of intimidation or retaliation. Education and child-protection advocates have stressed that complaints must be investigated promptly and that students should have access to counselling and other necessary support.

Meanwhile, the allegations remain subject to investigation, and the accused is entitled to due process. The outcome of the investigations will be important in establishing the facts and determining any legal or administrative consequences.

The developments have placed renewed attention on the responsibility of school authorities to protect learners and ensure that educational institutions remain safe environments.
