The National Democratic Congress has cleared the Headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School to contest for a constituency chairmanship position despite facing allegations of abuse.

The decision has sparked public debate over the party’s vetting standards for candidates with pending allegations.

Reacting to the controversy, Mohammed Issah, Member of Parliament for Sissala East and Board Member of the Tema Oil Refinery, defended the party’s decision.

According to him, the NDC does not condone criminal conduct in any form, but the party is bound by the constitutional principle of presumption of innocence.

Until a competent court of law finds the headmaster guilty, he cannot be disqualified from contesting on the basis of mere allegations, he emphasized.

The headmaster is expected to face other aspirants in the upcoming constituency elections as the NDC reorganizes its grassroots structures.
